Standard Edges

The Profiles Included in Standard Pricing

These are the workhorse edges — simple, clean, and included with every standard countertop quote.

Eased Edge

Most popular in Calgary by a wide margin. Flat top, flat front, with only a very slight softening on the top and bottom corners. Clean and modern. Suits almost every kitchen style. No extra charge.

Pencil Edge

Similar to eased but with a small rounded bead at the top corner. Slightly softer appearance than eased, still very clean. Often seen in transitional kitchens. Included in standard pricing.

Beveled Edge

A flat 45-degree angled cut on the top corner. More visual interest than eased, still modern. Very popular on quartz and dark granite. Catches the light well. Modest upcharge on some materials.

Upgraded Edges

Profiles That Add Character (and Some Cost)

Bullnose

The entire top edge is fully rounded into a half-circle profile. Classic, soft and traditional. Common in bathrooms and on vanity tops. Very safe for homes with young children. Popular in older Calgary neighborhoods with traditional homes.

Ogee

A decorative S-curve profile with a concave scoop and a convex curve. Very traditional and ornate. Suits formal kitchens with raised-panel cabinet doors. Less popular in new builds; very popular in heritage-style or Victorian-influenced Calgary homes.

Triple Pencil / Dupont

Multiple small rounded beads or a step profile that adds depth and texture to the edge. More visual complexity without being as ornate as ogee. Works well in transitional kitchens where you want a little more detail.

Premium Edges

The Edges That Make a Kitchen Unforgettable

Mitre (Laminated) Edge

The most popular premium edge in Calgary new builds right now. A strip of stone is bonded to the underside of the counter edge at a 45-degree mitre, making the counter appear 2 to 3 inches thick rather than the standard 3/4 inch. The look is solid, luxurious and contemporary. Adds cost due to the additional stone and labour. Works in any material; especially dramatic with veined quartzite or quartz.

Mitre Waterfall Edge

The mitre profile extended to the island sides as a continuous waterfall panel. The same stone flows from the horizontal top, over a 45-degree mitre, and down the sides to the floor. The most architecturally striking kitchen detail available. See our waterfall countertops page for full details.

How to Choose

Which Edge Profile is Right for Your Kitchen?

Modern / Contemporary Kitchen

Eased, beveled, or mitre. The cleaner and simpler, the better. Mitre edges on islands are especially popular in modern Calgary builds. Avoid ogee and bullnose, which read as traditional.

Transitional Kitchen

Eased, pencil or beveled. Sometimes a triple-pencil for a little more detail. Transitional kitchens work with almost any standard edge. When in doubt, eased is always right.

Traditional / Classic Kitchen

Bullnose or ogee. These profiles complement raised-panel cabinet doors, corbels, and detailed mouldings. A flat eased edge on a traditional kitchen can look incongruous.

Family Kitchen with Young Kids

Bullnose or eased. Avoid sharp 45-degree bevels and any profile with an exposed bottom corner. Rounded profiles are softer on little heads at counter height.

FAQ

Edge Profile Questions

Which edge is most popular in Calgary kitchens?
The eased edge is by far the most common choice in Calgary. It's clean, modern, and works in almost every kitchen style. Beveled and mitre edges are the fastest-growing choices, especially in new builds and contemporary renovations.
Do different edges cost more?
Yes. Standard edges like eased and pencil are included in base pricing. More detailed profiles add a modest per-linear-foot upcharge for the extra machine passes. Mitre (laminated) edges are the most expensive because they require additional stone material and bonding labour. All costs are itemized in your written quote.
What is the difference between a mitre edge and a waterfall edge?
A mitre edge (also called a laminated edge) is a thick profile created by bonding a strip of stone underneath the counter edge at 45 degrees, making the counter look much thicker. A waterfall edge extends this panel all the way down the side of the island to the floor. Waterfall is a mitre edge taken to its full expression.
Can I mix edge profiles in the same kitchen?
Yes, and it's done quite often. A mitre edge on the island with an eased edge on the perimeter counters is a popular combination — it gives the island more visual weight without the extra cost of mitring everything. We'll show you how that looks at the measure.
