Kitchen Renovation Countertops in Calgary: Sequence It Right
The most expensive countertop mistakes in Calgary renovations don't happen at the stone yard. They happen when the sequencing is wrong — countertops ordered before cabinets are set, backsplash tiled before the counter goes in, slab chosen without cabinet samples in hand. Here's how to avoid every one.
Kitchen Renovation Sequence: What Goes When
Choose Your Stone (Early)
Countertop selection should happen in the planning phase, well before demo begins. If you have your eye on a specific natural stone slab, buy it and hold it immediately — good slabs sell. For quartz, selection can happen later since it's manufactured to order.
Cabinets Are Installed and Levelled
This is the prerequisite for everything that follows. Do not template or order countertops until your cabinets are physically installed, secured and levelled. If the cabinets shift after templating, the stone won't fit.
Call Us to Template
Once cabinets are set, call us. We template within 1 to 2 business days. We measure from the actual installed cabinets, confirm sink and cooktop positions, verify island dimensions and note any walls that are out of square (they always are, and we compensate for it in the cut).
Countertops Fabricated: 3 to 5 Days
From template approval, your countertops are fabricated in 3 to 5 business days. Installation follows. The kitchen is without counters for this window — worth planning around for families with young kids or anyone who needs the kitchen functional.
Countertops Installed
Stone goes in. Sink and cooktop cutouts made and fitted. Edges polished. Silicone applied at backsplash wall and undermount sink. The kitchen is now functional again.
Backsplash After Countertops
Tile the backsplash after the countertops are in. The tile sits on top of the counter surface at the base, creating a clean transition. Installing backsplash first and then trying to fit the counter underneath it causes gaps and alignment headaches.
What Goes Wrong in Calgary Kitchen Renos — and How to Avoid It
Ordering Stone Before Cabinets Are Set
The single most common error. Drawings are not accurate enough for stone fabrication. We template from physical cabinets. If your contractor pushes you to order countertops from a plan to save time, push back — it saves nothing if the stone doesn't fit.
Choosing Stone in a Showroom Under Fluorescent Light
Stone looks completely different in showroom lighting than in your kitchen. Always bring home a sample and hold it against your cabinets in your own light before committing. We can bring samples to your home at the free measure — we do this routinely.
Not Holding the Slab You Want
A specific natural stone slab you love will not wait. Stone yards sell continuously. If you see the exact slab, buy it or put a deposit on it. A good slab for a popular kitchen project can be gone within a week of arriving at the yard.
Forgetting About Appliance Cutouts
Sink, cooktop, and any downdraft vent cutouts need to be confirmed before fabrication. Have the actual appliance or its spec sheet ready at templating. Approximate dimensions cause rework.
