What Is Quartzite

Not Quartz. Completely Different Stone.

The name causes endless confusion. Quartzite is natural rock, formed when sandstone gets buried deep in the earth and compressed under intense heat and pressure for millions of years. The result is one of the hardest stones available for countertops.

  • Harder than granite. Quartzite rates 7 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, above granite's 6 to 7. Everyday use won't scratch it.
  • Fully heat resistant. Unlike engineered quartz, quartzite won't scorch or discolour from a hot pan. It's natural rock all the way through.
  • Dramatic natural movement. The veining in quartzite comes from mineral intrusions during formation. No two slabs look the same.
  • Outdoor friendly. UV stable and frost tolerant, quartzite handles Calgary winters on outdoor kitchen counters where engineered stone can't go.
  • Needs annual sealing. Quartzite is porous, same as granite. One application of penetrating sealer per year keeps it stain-free.

FAQ

Quartzite Questions, Answered

What is the difference between quartz and quartzite?
Quartz is engineered: ground quartz crystals bound with resin. Quartzite is 100% natural rock formed underground. Quartzite is harder, fully heat-resistant, and every slab is unique. Quartz never needs sealing and has consistent patterns. They suit different kitchens and different priorities.
Does quartzite need to be sealed?
Yes, once a year with a penetrating stone sealer — the same routine as granite. It takes about 15 minutes. We seal every quartzite installation at handover and show you exactly how to do it yourself going forward.
How much do quartzite countertops cost in Calgary?
Installed quartzite in Calgary runs $90 to $200 per square foot depending on the slab. Super White is at the lower end; rare imports like Calacatta Macauba sit at the top. Your free in-home measure includes a written, itemized quote with the exact number.
Is quartzite good for outdoor kitchens in Calgary?
Yes. Quartzite is UV stable and handles freeze-thaw cycles well, making it one of the few natural stone options suitable for Calgary outdoor kitchens. Engineered quartz and porcelain are the other options we'd recommend outdoors.
